Julius Meinl

Sustainability, step by step

At Julius Meinl, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to our planet as well as those involved at every stage of our coffee journey as we work together to bring premium quality to every cup.

A beautiful world for future generations

We stand for the future of coffee just as much as we stand for its magnificent history.

As a fifth generation family business, it is up to us to take an active role in creating sustainable initiatives that will positively impact the entire coffee industry for years to come.

Our sustainability report

Julius Meinl has always had a responsibility to do what is best for our planet and coffee-farming communities facing increasing social, economic and environmental challenges.

In order to provide a closer look at our efforts so far, we have created our second Sustainability Report for 2019/20.

As well as a detailed look at Julius Meinl’s continued positive impact regarding sustainability, our report also shows how we safely navigated the COVID-19 pandemic together with our partners.

We are particularly proud of how, despite recent difficulties, we are driving our own sustainability initiatives even further.

Our Certificates

Through our owned sustainability initiatives, transparent reporting and independently verified traceability of our coffee, our sustainable commitments become a reality.

In addition to our Julius Meinl Generations Program and Our Responsibly Selected Coffee Initiative, the Julius Meinl Sustainability Portfolio includes a host of independently awarded certifications.

These certificates count among some of our proudest achievements, and are the result of working with partners who share our commitment to high quality coffee and sustainable, responsible places of origin.

Certificates currently awarded to Julius Meinl coffee products:

Fairtrade Certification. This ensures that the coffee importers, roasters and traders are guaranteed fair payment for their work.

EU organic Certification. The EU organic logo can only be used on products that have been certified as organic by an authorised EU control agency and fulfills conditions on how it must be produced, processed, transported and stored.

USDA organic Certification. This means our products are certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This recognizes production practices that foster resource cycling, promote ecological balance, maintain and improve soil and water quality, minimise the use of synthetic materials, and conserve biodiversity.

Note: Julius Meinl is clear on its commitment to sustainability and sourcing of Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee.

However, we are currently unable to take continuous delivery of enough certified coffee for all our products carrying the Rainforest Alliance seal and/or UTZ label.

This means that from February 2022, there is a risk that these products may not contain Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee. Nevertheless, the Rainforest Alliance has approved and allowed Julius Meinl to continue using the Rainforest Alliance seal or UTZ label on these products, as this situation is due to exceptional temporary supply chain disruptions.

In order to maintain the premium quality expected of our products, we may need to selectively and temporarily use equivalent non-certified coffees.

We expect this supply shortage to last until June 2023, with our products returning to a minimum of 90% certified coffee content thereafter. In 2023 we will purchase the same volume of certified coffee which would have otherwise been supplied under normal circumstances, thereby honouring our commitment to support coffee farmers and protect the environment.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Colombian Heritage

Many families in Tolima Department, Colombia, have businesses focused on the same passion for coffee. They are carefully passing on their experience and knowledge from generation to generation. But it’s getting harder for them to stay in the business.

Julius Meinl supports Colombian farmers to increase production efficiency for them and their future generations.

The idea is to enhance farmers’ business by helping them with trainings, technical assistance, coffee dryers and UTZ certification. The farmers can then increase production efficiency and their profits, meaning that they can invest more in their own business and future generations.
